Like many people, my first interest in wildlife was birds. This is probably because birds are one of the most visible groups of organisms which share the planet with us. My interest has expanded over the years to encompass all aspects of the natural world. I am very keen on butterflies, dragonflies and mammals, for example. I am also a life member of the British Dragonfly Society, and a member of Butterfly Conservation.

An excellent publication for those interested in butterflies, moths and other insects is Atropos.

One of the best ways to photograph small creatures and flowers close up is by way of a dedicated macro lens. I have used several over the years, including Tamron SP 90 (an excellent lens) and a Nikon 105 mm. I now use the Canon 100 mm. I have also recently acquired an extension tube for my lenses which should allow closer approach to my subject.

For distant subjects, the 500 mm lens is the business. The problem is that it weighs a great deal and I wish I could employ someone to carry it around for me and hand it over when I needed it!
